Dec 11, 2014 18:10

Marie Paule Pileni, theAcademician of the Academy of Europe and Distinguished Professor of Maria Curie - Skłodowska University, at the invitation of Academician Hao Yue, the Vice President of Xidian University and Dean of the School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, visited the School of Materials from November 3 to 4.

On the morning of November 3, Academician Hao Yue,theDean of the School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, met with Academician Pileni in the North Campus. Huang Wei,theSecretary of the Party Committee of the School, Executive Dean Shi Xiaowei,Vice Dean Ma Xiaohua, and young teachers Yang Peng and Wan Yanfen attended this seminar. Hao Yue expressed his sincere welcome to Academician Pileni and introduced the School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology. He said that the School hopes to establish a scientific research cooperation relationship with Academician Pileni to create a special research zone for new materials, vigorously accelerate the development of the School, define its own nanotechnology research direction, and build its own scientific research characteristics.

Academician Pileni expressed his gratitude to Academician Hao Yue for this invitation. She said that as the doctoral advisor of Yang Peng and Wan Yanfen, she hoped to establish an international cooperation relationship with the School of Materials by virtue of teacher-student relationship to promote the rapid development of the School.

Subsequently, Academician Pileni held a discussion with the person in charge of the School. The two sides discussed in detail the research interests and field of future cooperation, cooperation mode, research cooperation plan, joint graduate students training, and establishment of “International Nano Materials Research Institute”. The cooperation direction intention was finally reached, which laid a solid foundation for further cooperation between the both sides. The cooperation will definitely play a powerful role in promoting the School’s comprehensive and rapid development in advanced materials and nanotechnology.

On the afternoon of November 3, Academician Pileni participated in the “Advocating Academics and Pursuing Excellence” Anniversary Academic Seminar of School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology in the Conference Hall, Administrative Building, South Campus, and presented a report entitled “Nano and Supra Crystals Real Challenges: Specific Chemical and Physical Properties”. More than 300 teachers and students of School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology attended this seminar.

At the seminar, Academician Pileni gave a vivid and in-depth exposition on the definition, growth and application of supra crystals. Nanocrystalline structure, that is, the crystallinity of nano particles, controls the clustering performance of particles in the supra crystal, as well as the optical, electrical, mechanical, physical and chemical properties of supra crystals. Academician Pileni intuitively and vividly demonstrated that nanotechnology was in common with many phenomena in nature, so we could always find a nano world in nature. Academician Pileni’s report content and high academic level quickly aroused the enthusiasm of teachers and students, forming a very active atmosphere.

Subsequently, Academician Pilen actively discussed with teachers and students present. At the seminar, teachers and students actively raised many questions, such as the essential difference and correlation between nanocrystalline and supra crystal, the application of supra crystal in life, how to conduct scientific research well, and whether to change the research direction or not. Academician Pileni carefully answered each question in detail, and encouraged females to actively participate in scientific research. The academic exchange was completed in a warm atmosphere. After the seminar, freshmen invited Academician Pileni to give some words of advice or encouragement. This academic seminar not only brought an authentic academic feast for the School, but also let the participating teachers and students appreciate the demeanor of world-famous scientist, and even inspired the enthusiasm of teachers and students to devote themselves into scientific and academic research.

It is reported that according to the overall arrangement of the 2014 “Travel in Science” Academic Annual Conference of Postgraduates, the School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology has set up a leading group led by the dean for the unified deployment, organization and coordination of the academic annual conference. In the near future, the School will continue to invite famous experts in materials related fields to visit the University for communication and discussion, aiming to construct characteristic materials discipline, create a great atmosphere of “advocating academics and pursuing excellence”, strengthen the construction of campus academic culture, and stimulate students’ enthusiasm and creativity in scientific research.
