Jun 7, 2019 18:20

(Correspondents Yue Deng and Xiao Jin) In order to improve the academic level of teachers and students and create a dense academic research atmosphere, the Schoolhasinvited a number of domestic and foreign experts and scholars to deliver several high-level academic reports to teachers and students.

On May 10, Professor Wang Zhiming, theDirector of the Institute of Fundamental and Frontier Sciences (IFFS) at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), conducted academic exchange at the invitation of the School, and delivered an academic report entitled “Photoinduced Ultrasonic Driven Fluid and Laser Driven Microfluidic Pump”. This seminar was presided over by Professor Yang Rusen, the Vice Dean of the School. Some teachers and graduate students of the School participated to this seminar.

At the seminar, Professor Wang Zhiming first introduced the latest research achievements of the team, i.e. a new microfluidic pump based on photoinduced ultrasonic driven fluid. Professor Wang Zhiming’s team proposed a new mechanism of optical fluidics, i.e. acoustic effect and acoustic wave driven fluid effect. Under this mechanism, the continuous high-speed water jet of 4 cm/s was achieved for the first time in water by pulsed laser incident on a cuvette containing aqueous solution of gold nanoparticles. Single pump, dynamic pump and multi-pump modes can be easily realized by controlling the laser beam programmatically. The laser driven microfluidic pump opens a new door for the development of micropump technology, provides new opportunities for the integration and multi-functional application of microfluidic pump, and promotes the development of microfluidic chip technology, ultrasonic drug delivery, medical surgery and other fields. In the report, Professor Wang Zhiming also introduced the development history of IFFS from its inception to its growth and expansion, and shared his valuable experience accumulated in the process of development and growth of IFFS.

On the same day, Dr. Sun Xiangcheng of Cornell University presented a report entitled “Preparation and Application of Fluorescent Materials: Explosive Detection and Polymer Observation” at Room G118. This report focused on the explosive detection ways with a wide range of practical application scenarios, such as international anti-terrorism, mine detection, and environmental monitoring, etc. Dr. Sun proposed that his research group prepared 3D nanoporous films and electrospun fiber membrane fluorescent materials with polymer doped system to overcome this difficulty. Owing to its wide contact area, this material can be utilized to detect explosives in gas and solution. Microwave-assisted method will work effectively when it is used correctly even if this method is simple. All of these provide a new research idea for the researchers at site.

On May 13, Associate Professor Guan Jingqi of Jilin University presented an academic report entitled “A Study on Electro-catalytic Property of Unit Point Catalyst” at Room G118. This report mainly focused on the design and preparation science of hydrogen release, oxygen release and oxygen reduction reaction. He proposed to use O, N and other ligands to stabilize mononuclear / polynuclear metal ions, and then prepare new mononuclear or polynuclear heterogeneous catalysts, and improve the electro-catalytic property. He also explored solutions to key scientific problems such as crystal structure and construction principle of mononuclear or polynuclear catalysts.

On May 23, Professor Steven Dunn, theDirector of the Department of Chemical Engineering at London South Bank University, was invited to present a report entitled “Harnessing Intrinsic Functionality for A Reduced Carbon Energy” at the School. This report mainly focused on energy conversion and storage, functional materials, piezoelectric materials or thermoelectric materials. The findings including water decomposition and antibacterial activity were described based on the development of chemical reaction process, such as the water decomposition with low enthalpy waste heat.
